Settlers

I love this one, for its enigmatic title, the Caravaggio look that it has, and the feeling that there is a good story behind it. Could these be settlers in the sense that they have just moved into new houses - maybe neighbours? What is the purpose of the tray in the main man's hand - is it for drinks or for collecting winnings? Is the card game still going on?

Das Kartenspiel

1948-1950
Balthus

The picture has echoes of The Cardsharps by Valentin de Boulogne. But although he appears to be concealing a card, there is surely no serious card-sharping going on from the man? His strange position and twisted body means he cannot transfer the hidden card without falling over, nor could the concealment be missed by the woman on the left.
